GMSHAY is working closely with the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) to revitalize the historic Wells House, a property deeply rooted in Boulder County’s history. Originally part of the Boulder County Poor Farm and Hospital, the Wells House is a notable example of Queen Anne architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property later became home to the Hummel family, with Mary Hummel Wells living there on and off from 1920 until 2018, before the City of Boulder acquired the site following her passing. GMSHAY’s work focuses on retaining and restoring the home’s original architectural fabric while upgrading mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to meet current codes. The project will create two dwelling units for agricultural management employees, providing needed workforce housing, with one unit fully accessible—ensuring the next chapter of the Wells House honors both its past and public purpose.
